Although naturalness is our priority, it is not always possible to preserve it. Following an injury, misaligned teeth, or irreversible damage, a tooth extraction procedure may be necessary. This and other oral surgery procedures cause anxiety for many people, and that is natural. However, we have good news—technology is advancing, so even surgical procedures are now performed without causing pain.

The tooth extraction procedure

Oral surgery is a very broad field of dentistry. It encompasses a wide range of structures, from the teeth to the sinuses. However, such procedures are most commonly required when a tooth is being extracted.

Before extracting a tooth, the dentist takes an X-ray. This is very important, as it reveals the position of the tooth roots and the condition of surrounding tissues, thereby reducing the risk of complications after the extraction procedure. Once the patient is completely pain-free, the tooth is precisely removed using surgical instruments. It’s much faster than it looks!

Of course, having a tooth extracted isn’t the most pleasant prospect. However, the sooner you remove a misaligned or irreparably decayed tooth, the better you’ll be able to maintain your dental and oral health. In addition, microorganisms from an infected tooth can be carried throughout the body via the bloodstream. This means that an infection that starts in a tooth can affect other organs as well.

What to expect after a tooth extraction:

  • You may experience light bleeding during the first 24 hours after surgery. However, the discomfort will subside within a few days.
  • Sometimes there are no postoperative symptoms, so you can return to your normal activities the same day or the next day.
  • Your recovery will go smoothly if you take the medications prescribed by your doctor and follow their recommendations.
